TRENTON, NJ -- August 2, 2006. New Jersey Tourism, through its Cooperative Marketing Program, recently awarded the Highlands a $15,000 grant to initiate a Water Taxi Service along the seaside villages.
“The state recognizes the program as a viable asset to the Highlands efforts in promoting the areas natural beauty and those attractions that will lure tourists and keep them coming to the shore,” said Nancy Byrne, Executive Director of Travel and Tourism.
The water taxi operates Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 pm-8:00 pm making four stops. Restaurants such as The Clam Hut, Windansea, Inlet Café, The Sugar Shack, Doris and Ed’s, Bahrs, Moby’s and The Original Oyster as well as other shops and services are conveniently located along the route. Plans in the near future call for service to Sandy Hook (Gateway National Recreation Area) and the Seastreak Ferry terminal, which would link the taxi with high-speed ferry service to Manhattan. Fares are $2.50 for a single ride or $10 for an all-day unlimited pass.
The Cooperative Marketing Sponsorship Program, administered by the Office of Travel & Tourism considers a combination of criteria when determining approval of the sponsorship awards. The criteria includes the applicant's significant interest in the promotion of a tourist destination, attraction or activity, as well as the ability of the program or event to promote the Office of Travel and Tourism to broad audiences or targeted markets, including cultural, historic and ethnic.
The Water Taxi project was conceived and is operated by the Highlands Business Partnership (HBP) Economic Development Committee, with a goal of enhancing the town as a tourist destination.
The Cooperative Marketing Sponsorship Program has been a valuable tool for tourism industry representatives who show a commitment to increasing visitation and generating visitor revenues throughout the Garden State.
