ATLANTA -- July 19, 2006. The Woodruff Arts Center’s Celebrate Diversity Through the Arts initiative announced today its sponsorship of the 9th Annual Osun Festival presented by Manga African Dance, Inc., Aug. 24 – 27, located at various venues around metro Atlanta.
The Woodruff will host the Osun Oroki Concert on Aug. 26 in the Rich Auditorium. Performances will be 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The presentation is a two-hour, full-length production celebrating the Yoruba goddess with a collage of dance, theatre, drumming and spiritual homage.
“The goal Celebrate is to introduce new audiences to different ideas and cultures by presenting multi-cultural programming,” said David Manuel, Woodruff’s Project Director for Celebrate Diversity Through the Arts. “Being a part of the Osun Festival is one more way we bring the community together in a celebration of our diversity and similarities.”
The Osun Festival is an extension of a cultural festival that began in Osogbo, Nigeria centuries ago. The Atlanta-based event is an energetic celebration featuring Manga company dancers and guest dancers who pay homage to Osun (pronounced O-shoon), a Yoruba Orisha (messenger of God) who reigns over beauty, wealth and unconditional love.
“We are excited about telling the story of Osun to a broader audience this year,” said Ramatu Afegbua-Sabbatt, the Executive Director of Manga African Dance. “Not only will we showcase Yoruba cultural arts from Nigeria, but in the spirit of the global village, we will join hands with Africa by celebrating with the city of Oshogbo.”
