Atlanta defeated Los Angeles by a score of 5-3 to capture the 2006 Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) World Series Girls Softball Championship today at the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California. This marks the sixth consecutive title for Atlanta, who has held the championship title since 2001.
As the winner of the Girls Softball title, Atlanta was awarded the Dolly Vardens Trophy, named for an all African-American women's team formed in Philadelphia in 1867.

The Girls Softball championship game marked the conclusion of the 14th annual RBI World Series. This year's event was hosted by Major League Baseball from August 2-10. Angels Stadium, the home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, was the site for the Junior and Senior Boys championship games and the MLB Urban Youth Academy played host to the Girls Softball championship game. The RBI World Series is the championship round of the RBI program, the youth baseball and softball initiative sponsored by Major League Baseball in conjunction with Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), the official charity of Major League Baseball. Each year, the RBI World Series competition provides a forum for some of the top youth players from the U.S. and abroad to showcase their skills.

RBI alumni currently on Major League Baseball rosters include Carl Crawford (Tampa Bay Devil Rays), Covelli "Coco" Crisp (Cleveland Indians) and Luis Matos (Washington Nationals), Jimmy Rollins (Philadelphia Phillies) and Dontrelle Willis (Florida Marlins).

RBI is one of a number of Major League Baseball initiatives dedicated to enhancing youth participation and interest in baseball and softball. Specifically, RBI is designed to promote interest in the sport, increase the self-esteem of disadvantaged children, and encourage kids to stay in school and off the streets. RBI programs have been started in more than 200 cities worldwide, and annually have provided as many as 120,000 boys and girls the opportunity to play baseball and softball.
