September 9
American Heroes Day - Rodathe, NC
The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site will be holding its first annual “American Heroes Day” on Saturday, September 9, 2006. Wear your Red, White and Blue and celebrate our nation’s Military and Civilian Heroes on Hatteras Island, the site of the first Life-Saving Station in what would become the US Coast Guard. Bring the family for F-117 Stealth Fighter flybys, and Coast Guard aerial/ocean rescues. Special guests include the famed Tuskeegee Airmen, local Firefighters and Lawmen. Chicamacomico was part of the United States Life-Saving Service, and was the first station built in North Carolina. The original station, dating from 1874, is still on the site as one of eight buildings belonging to the Chicamacomico Historical Association.

The United States Life-Saving Service (1871-1915) were the original rescue heroes, the “storm warriors” who made dramatic and heroic rescues of shipwreck victims whose lives were in peril from the sea. In the 44 year history of the Service, nation-wide, these men responded to over 178,000 lives in peril out in the Graveyard of the Atlantic. A success rate of 99%!

September 15-16
Day at the Docks - Hatteras Island, NC
A Celebration of Hatteras Island Watermen. The celebration will run from 10 AM-5 PM along the harbor in Hatteras Village. Historic boats representing several of North Carolina's oldest fisheries will line the site of the celebration. In addition to shad boats, beach dories, and mullet skiffs, modern commercial fishing vessels and charter boats will be on display, and guests can tour the United States Coast Guard's 47' motor lifeboat. Commercial fishermen and charter-boat captains will share stories describing what it's like to make a living from the sea. Watermen will also demonstrate how they use different types of fishing gear, and will compete in contests measuring their speed in the skills they use every day. Seafood experts will teach the best way to fillet fish and pick crabs, and how to prepare traditional island dishes. Children and their parents are invited to join in on the fun, including a fish identification game, hard crab races, and a scavenger hunt. There is no admission fee for Day at the Docks.
